One of the highlights of the social calendar on Tybee Island is the annual Tybee Island Tour of Homes. Held on the first Saturday in June (June 7, 2014) this event is well supported by locals and attracts many visitors to the island for a short break.
Plans are already underway to make the 17th annual tour of homes in 2014 better than ever! Nine local homeowners are opening the doors of their private homes in aid of charity.
What to Expect at the Tybee Island Tour of Homes
The Tybee Island Tour of Homes is a wonderful event for anyone with an interest in architecture, particularly those staying in other renovated historic homes on Tybee Island as part of the Luxury Living Tybee vacation home collection. It also offers a rare chance to see how some of these beautiful homes have been furnished in keeping with their maritime and historic location.
Many of the historic homes on Tybee Island were built as funky beach cottages and holiday homes. They play an important part in this summer event as well as opening their doors in December for the similar Holiday Home Tour.
Highlights of previous home tours included the chance to admire the sympathetic restoration of a 1915 Fort Screven storage facility along with two stunning 1930s inspired cottage restorations. Visitors were also able to admire a 1950s showcase home which has been meticulously restored to an exceptional standard by award-winning interior and architectural designer, Jane Coslick.
Although some of the venues for the Tybee Island Tour of Homes may change each year, the concept and pleasure of the tour remains the same. Many of the homes have been restored to their former glory using reclaimed materials and vintage items to retain the character and charm of each much-loved home.
What Your Historic Homes Tour Ticket Includes
Doors open for the first eager visitors at 10am and the event finishes at 4pm. You can start your tour wherever you choose and there’s plenty of time to visit all 9 historic homes and admire their gardens too.
Tickets can be bought on the day of or in advance from The Gallery by the Sea on Tybee Island and includes lunch. The event takes places in rain or shine as it is mostly an indoor event. Along with your ticket for admission to the 9 show homes, visitors also get a map to locate each property.
All proceeds from the ticket sales will be divided between a number of worthwhile local causes including the Tybee Island Maritime Academy, the Rising Tydes Community Food Pantry and the Fresh Air Home.
The Old School Cafeteria is the refreshment venue and a complimentary lunch is served to all ticket holders between 11am and 2pm. The café is located next to the YMCA on Butler Avenue and Fifth Street. It provides a chance to rest your feet and compare notes with other visitors participating in the tour of homes.
As well as enjoying a unique chance to step over the threshold of some of the most charming and historic beach cottages on Tybee Island, the tour of homes also includes grand coastal mansions. Each historic home is uniquely different in character, style and furnishings, which may be why this tour of homes is one of the most popular in the region.
